To me how I interprete it is that the song is about like a forbidden love. She loves this guy, and she knows he loves her, but this isn't the right time for them to pursue anything with each other, therefore they have to resort to "dancing in the dark", on the low....like she says, "you can't love me, no you can't love me..." There are reasons why the can't be together, but even through those reasons, she still wants him but she can't take him...so she has to "groove on her own".
